WHY EARN THE CIM Designation?

The Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation, previously called the Canadian Investment Manager, is a professional certification granted by the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) and is the industry standard for discretionary investment and portfolio management services. This license is recognized by Canadian securities regulators and it ensures that those who earn it are qualified to evaluate and manage all aspects of a client's investment portfolio.

Paths to earn the cim designation

Path 1

This path requires completion of the IMT and PMT courses:
Step 1
Pass The Imt Exams
The IMT Course consists of one textbook and two exams. Exam 1 consists of 110 stand-alone multiple choice questions and Exam 2 consists of 50 case based multiple choice questions. Each exam is 3 hours and consists of 100 stand-alone multiple choice questions. Candidates require score of 60% or higher on each exam to pass.
Step 2
Pass The pmt Exam
The PMT Course consists of one textbook and one 3 hour exam. The exam consists of 120 stand-alone multiple choice questions.  Candidates require score of 60% or higher on he exam to pass.
Step 3
ACheive Qualified Work Experience
Have at least 2 years of experience within the past 5 years involved in an investment management capacity that includes applying or supervising any aspect of the investment management process.
Step 4
Apply for CIM Certification
 You can apply once you have completed the qualifying work experience,. You may be required to provide supporting documentation (resume, employer/ client letters). 

Path 2

This path requires completion of the AIS and PMT courses:
Step 1
Pass The ais Exam
The AIS Course consists of one textbook and one 2 hour exam. The exam consists of 75 stand-alone multiple choice questions.  Candidates require score of 60% or higher on he exam to pass..
Step 2
Pass The pmt Exam
The PMT Course consists of one textbook and one 3 hour exam. The exam consists of 120 stand-alone multiple choice questions.  Candidates require score of 60% or higher on he exam to pass.
Step 3
ACheive Qualified Work Experience

What is the 5 year rule?

Individuals must apply for the designation within 5 years of successfully completing the PMT Examination. Individuals who do not qualify for the designation within this 5 year period will be required to re-take the PMT course and examination prior to being granted the designation.

Does the CIM designation lead to FCSI?

Qualified graduates may be eligible to apply for the Canadian Securities Institute's highest honour -- the prestigious Fellow of CSI (FCSI) designation.
