Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CFP certification and QAFP certification?

While a CFP professional has demonstrated the depth of knowledge, skills and experience to examine their clients’ entire financial picture at the highest level of complexity required of the financial planning profession, a QAFP professional is equipped to provide financial planning strategies and solutions for clients who have less complex financial planning needs.

CFP certification is a designation that is recognized in 26 territories around the world.

QAFP certification is a Canadian credential and is only offered by FP Canada to professionals providing financial planning services in Canada.

What are the different paths to certification?

Instead of the single path to CFP certification that was in place prior to 2020, FP Canada has established distinct certification paths for QAFP certification and CFP certification. Candidates now have 3 choices:

  1. Pursue QAFP certification and stop there,
  2. Pursue CFP certification directly, or
  3. Pursue QAFP certification first and continue on the path to CFP certification in the future.

These multiple paths to certification offer maximum flexibility to candidates.
